Family relationships in Cambodia are governed primarily by the Civil Code of Cambodia (2007), Book 7. We advise clients on the formal requirements for marriage (including capacity, consent and registration), the recognition of foreign marriages, and the legal consequences of marriage under Cambodian law. When a marriage breaks down, we assist with both consensual and contested divorce proceedings. Consensual divorce can be processed more efficiently when the parties reach agreement on children and property; contested divorce requires proof of statutory grounds and careful case preparation. We also advise on legal separation and the interim arrangements that protect parties and children pending final resolution. Cross-border elements—foreign spouses, assets abroad, or parallel proceedings in another country—are common and receive particular attention.
